Throughout the year we also operate a number of Special Footplate Experiences, giving you the opportunity to do something different!

Class 66 & Class 73/1 Diesel Footplate Experiences

£875 per person
(all proceeds go to GBRf’s chosen charity for 2018 and the Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust).

Have you ever wanted to drive a modern diesel locomotive? Working in partnership with GB Railfreight (GBRf), the Severn Valley Railway is excited to announce a number of exclusive Footplate Experience days using modern diesel locomotives.

Operating in June 2018, you could have the chance to take the controls of a modern diesel locomotive, hauling a carriages or freight vehicles for 16 miles. Believed to be a world first, members of the public will be able to drive a Class 66 or Class 73/1 locomotive along the whole length of the Severn Valley Railway between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth on June 4th or 5th.

The Class 66 Experience on June 4th & 5th includes:
  • Safety briefing before the session commences.
  • Tour of the locomotive engine room, including a start-up procedure demonstration.
  • Travel in the cab; driving for 16 miles, and acting as second man for 16 miles. A further 32 miles is spent in the shark brake-van.
  • Travelling a total journey of 64 miles with five hopper wagons and shark brake-van; going through Bewdley Tunnel, over Victoria Bridge and up Eardington Bank.
  • Tour of award-winning Kidderminster Diesel Depot
  • Only 4 participants per experience.
  • Unfortunately, no guests can be accomodated on this Experience
  • Opportunities for photographs.
  • A presentation folder with a certificate and memento of your experience.
The Class 73/1 Experience on June 4th & 5th includes:
  • Safety briefing before the session commences.
  • Tour of the locomotive engine room, including a start-up procedure demonstration.
  • Travel in the cab; driving for 16 miles, and acting as second man for 16 miles. A further 32 miles is spent in the private train.
  • Travelling a total journey of 64 miles with four heritage carriages; going through Bewdley Tunnel, over Victoria Bridge and up Eardington Bank.
  • Tour of award-winning Kidderminster Diesel Depot
  • Only 4 participants per experience.
  • You can bring along up to 6 guests only who can travel in the carriages behind the locomotive (guests must be over the age of 5) free of charge.
  • Opportunities for photographs.
  • A presentation folder with a certificate and memento of your experience.
The Class 66, first introduced to Britain’s railways in 1998, is the backbone of modern freight operations throughout the country, and has a whopping 3,000bhp engine. The Class 73/1s can normally be found on engineering trains in the south-east, and very rarely operate passenger trains.

Looking for that perfect way to celebrate? A day out with your mates? Or even a corporate function? Hiring out your own Private Footplate Experience train is the way to go!

What's included:

  • Take control of one of our steam or diesel locomotives over the whole length of the line on your own privately-hired train.
  • Package includes at least two round trips, covering approximately 64 miles.
  • The numbers of guests and drivers is negotiable to suit your needs.
  • Additional services on the day of your train can also be provided: food, more mileage etc.
  • Get into contact with us to create your very own, tailor-made, Footplate Experience.
