Our shareholder structure

The Severn Valley Railway as we know it today started in 1965 following the closure of the original Severn Valley line by British Railways, almost 60 years ago. Not wishing to see the line disappear, a group of local enthusiasts formed the Severn Valley Railway Society, and over a short period raised £25,000 to buy the 6-mile stretch of railway from Bridgnorth to a point just south of Hampton Loade, where coal trains still ran to Alveley colliery. To operate services between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade it was necessary to form a company. The Severn Valley Railway Company Limited, a company limited by guarantee, was therefore formed, and services between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade began on May 23rd 1970.
