55 years on, since End of Steam on London Transport
Saturday 6 – Sunday 7 June
This year sees the milestone of 55 years since the end of steam on the London Transport system.
Engine House resident L.95 spent its working life with GWR and BR as 5764, based at Old Oak Common depot from July 1929 to April 1960. It was used on empty coaching stock workings into Paddington terminus, and trip freight and shunting work in the West London area. In May 1960, after an overhaul at Stafford Road Works, Wolverhampton, it was sold to London Transport, repainted into their maroon livery, renumbered L.95 to work on their Underground system in yards and on engineers works trains until 6 June 1971.
The loco has been operated on the SVR for many years since July 1971 and more recently has been on display at The Engine House, Highley alongside its accompanying exhibition “L.95 – A Locomotive History: From London to the Severn Valley Railway,” which has been in place since spring 2019.
To mark the occasion, we will be joined by LT locomotive groups with the following:
- Authors John Scott Morgan and Kirk Martin will deliver a joint presentation using digitised slides at 3pm on Saturday and 11.30am on Sunday at The Engine House. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to attend one of the presentations.
- Worcester Locomotive Society Ltd., owners of L.92
- Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, owners of L.89
- Display featuring high resolution digitised archive images by Geoff Plumb, a key contributor to the Red Panniers book.
- 57xx ‘O’ gauge locos & wagons from Spetchley Halt layout working on Andrews Yard model layout.
The event is being run by SVR Pannier Tank Fund from 10.45am to 4.30pm with last entry at 4pm.
