Extra brake van rides announced after sell-out at SVR Gala

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) has announced additional goods train brake van experiences following the sell-out success of the attraction during its Spring Steam Gala.

The heritage railway has secured the services of visiting locomotive LMS ‘Pug’ 11243 to haul a series of special brake van trips on goods trains on Saturday 25 April and Sunday 26 April. All journeys will depart from Bewdley, running either to Arley or Kidderminster.

On Saturday, all trips will operate as return journeys, while on Sunday, passengers can choose between single or return travel options.

Lewis Maddox, the SVR’s visitor engagement manager, said: “Following the incredible response to this offer for our upcoming Spring Steam Gala, we’re delighted to be able to offer more of these unique brake van experiences. This is a rare chance to step into the world of traditional railway freight operation. Travelling in a brake van means you’re fully immersed in the sounds, smells and atmosphere of a working railway. It’s noisy, it’s gritty, and it’s an unforgettable experience. With demand expected to be extremely high once again, we strongly recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.”

The SVR emphasises that this is not a typical heritage railway ride. The brake van offers a much firmer, more rugged experience than standard passenger coaches, and conditions can be loud, with the presence of coal dust and ash, particularly when travelling through tunnels. Anyone with heart, respiratory or back conditions is advised to seek medical guidance before booking.

For this experience, passengers will travel either in the brake van immediately behind the locomotive or in a centrally positioned brake van within the train. The railway is using brake vans that have been restored by its volunteers, including GWR ‘Toad’, BR 993898 ‘Shark’ and SR 55577 ‘Pillbox’,

Places are strictly limited for each departure and must be booked in advance. Tickets are only valid when purchased alongside a valid travel ticket, such as a Day Rover or ‘Freedom of the Line’ ticket.
